Nueva York, la capital del mundo

No, no la conocía aun. En cambio sabía todo de ella. Que siempre lleva las últimas tendencias, que acoge a personas de todo el mundo, que es vanguardista, muy deseada, que está en boca de todos y que enamora a todo aquel que la ve.

Nosotras no nos habíamos visto en persona pero yo ya sentía que la conocía, es como si hubiéramos coincidido en otra vida. Había recorrido sus calles, paseado por sus parques, admirado sus alturas y comido en los locales de moda. Y así, de pronto, con un billete comprado con 2 días de antelación, me planto en la capital del mundo: NEW YORK CITY.

Sin duda esta esta es LA CIUDAD. Es uno de los lugares que más conoces, que más has visto y posiblemente de los más anhelados. Rodajes, sesiones de foto, galerías de arte, rascacielos, moda, tendencias… todo pasa en la ciudad que nunca duerme. (Un término que reconozco que antes de patear esta ciudad le tenía un poco de manía, pero que ahora entiendo perfectamente.) ¿Qué tiene? ¿Qué la hace tan especial? Supongo que es porque todo pasa allí, antes que en ningún otro lugar. Que puedes ser quien quieras ser, soñar grande y vivir dentro de una película.

¿Qué ver en Nueva York en una semana? Hay tanto que ver que me parece muy complicado dar recomendaciones. Querer ver todo la primera vez me parece muy difícil, sobre todo si lo que quieres es vivir la ciudad y descubrir rincones, que es lo que a mí me parece más interesante. VIVIR LA CIUDAD: desde ahora mismo aviso que algún día lo haré (quiero decir: vivir en Nueva York).

Mi única recomendación para no morir en el intento de querer ver todo y arruinarte por el camino (ojo con los precios de la gran manzana), es que hagas un plan de lo que mas ilusión te hace visitar. Elige una localización de tu serie o película favorita, la vista de un rascacielos, un restaurante conocido, una de esas tiendas que solo encuentras en el Soho y organízate por barrios y por días de la semana. Por ejemplo: Williamsburg y Dumbo en Brooklyn los visitaría en fin de semana; Downtown con los ejecutivos de Wall Street lo haría en diario para ver mejor el ambiente. Incluso puede que veas a alguien levantar la mano pidiendo el clásico «taxi!».

Una de las actividades más interesantes que he hecho es asistir a una charla en The Explorers Club. Me sentí una auténtica aventurera rodeada de exploradores en un edificio muy singular del Upper East Side. Hay sesiones todas las semanas, ¡muy recomendado!

Este viaje se ha basado en caminar mucho, fijarme en los detalles, ver, observar, fotografiar y dejarme llevar (sé que he tenido ventaja al ir con gente que conoce y vive en la ciudad). De alguna manera mi creatividad se ha despertado en este viaje. ¿Cómo no va a hacerlo si las calles están llenas de nuevos inputs para mis ojos? Me he quedado con ganas de más, de experimentar en la fotografía, con los ángulos, centrarme en un tema cada vez que salgo con la cámara… y esto me parece un lujo, ya que esta inspiración no la tengo en todos los viajes.

Por último, importante: recuerda dejarte algo muy especial pendiente de ver en Nueva York para que siempre quieras volver.

New York City, the capital of the world.

No, I didn’t know her yet. On the other hand, I knew everything about her. That she always wears the latest trends, that she welcomes people from all over the world, that she is avant-garde, highly desirable, that everyone is talking about her and that everyone who sees her falls in love with her.

We had not met in person but I already felt I knew her, it was as if we had met in another life. I had walked its streets, strolled through its parks, admired its heights and eaten in its fashionable restaurants. And so, suddenly, with a ticket bought 2 days in advance, I arrived in the capital of the world: NEW YORK CITY.

Without a doubt this is THE CITY. It is one of the places that you know more about it, that you have always seen and possibly one of the most desired. Shootings, photo shoots, art galleries, skyscrapers, fashion, trends… everything happens in the city that never sleeps (a term that I admit I didn’t like it before I started walking around this city, but now I understand it perfectly). What is it about it? What makes it so special? I guess it’s because everything happens there, before anywhere else. That you can be whoever you want to be, dream big and live inside a movie.

What to see in New York in a week? There is so much to see that I find it very difficult to give recommendations. I think it’s very difficult to see everything the first time, especially if you want to experience the city and discover new places, which is what I find most interesting. LIVE THE CITY: I’m going to do it one day (I mean: live in New York).

My only recommendation so that you don’t die trying to see everything and ruin yourself along the way (watch out for the prices in the Big Apple), is to make a plan of what you’re most excited about visiting. Choose a location from your favourite series or film, a view of a skyscraper, a well-known restaurant, one of those shops you can only find in Soho and organise yourself by neighbourhoods and days of the week. For example: Williamsburg and Dumbo in Brooklyn I would visit on weekends; Downtown with the Wall Street executives I would visit daily to get a better feel for the atmosphere. You might even see someone raise their hand and ask for the classic «taxi»!

One of the most interesting activities I have done is attending a talk at The Explorers Club. I felt like a real adventurer surrounded by explorers in a very unique building on the Upper East Side. There are sessions every week, highly recommended!

This trip has been based on walking a lot, looking at the details, seeing, observing, photographing and letting myself go (I know I have had the advantage of going with people who know and live in the city). Somehow my creativity has been awakened on this trip, and how could it not be when the streets are full of new inputs for my eyes? I have been left wanting more, to experiment with photography, with angles, to focus on one subject every time I go out with the camera… and this seems like a luxury to me, as I don’t get this inspiration on every trip.

Last but not least: remember to leave something very special to see in New York for the next time… that way you will always want to come back.
