Bosques de laurisilva, vientos alisios, volcanes en erupción, paisaje lunar, cetáceos que cruzan el Atlántico, piscinas naturales y una gastronomía tan deliciosa que querrás llevártela a casa. Por si no fuera suficiente, pocos cielos del mundo pueden presumir de ser el mejor. Por algo llaman a La Palma ‘la isla bonita’.

Quien conoce las Islas Canarias sabe que cada isla tiene su propio carácter, cada una es muy diferente a la otra, así que para todos aquellos que se quieran sorprender con este tesoro de la naturaleza, esta es la guía definitiva para visitar La Palma.

Uno de los atractivos principales de la isla son las rutas de trekking. Las hay para todos los públicos así que debes ponerlas en tu lista de cosas que ver y hacer en La Palma:

Rutas sencillas:

Los Tilos. Es una ruta sencilla e ideal para entender cómo de verde es esta isla. Mi recomendación es ir hasta el mirador y a la bajada, ver la preciosa cascada que está entre el primer parking y el centro de visitantes.
El Cubo de la Galga. Es otra de las rutas más famosas pero hay más desnivel desde el principio.
La Cumbrecita. Está en La caldera de Taburiente. Hay que pedir permiso para entrar con el coche. Son unos 40 minutos de ruta. Es muy sencilla e imprescindible para ver desde dentro la caldera de Taburiente, una auténtica joya de La Palma. Si haces la ruta de Los Tilos o el Cubo de la Galga y esta, entenderás a la perfección los dos paisajes que te puedes encontrar en isla: bosques de laurisilva y de pino canario. (OJO! El único radar que hay en la isla está justo antes del centro de visitantes de La Caldera, a unos 10 min pasado el túnel, lo indica. Funciona y multan. De nada).

Rutas algo más exigentes, pero increíbles:

Marcos y Cordero: es una de las rutas más fascinantes de La Palma. Solo voy a decir que debes llevar chubasquero y frontal. Se atraviesan 13 túneles de agua y se va descendiendo por el corazón de la isla, siempre acompañados del sonido del agua y envueltos en un típico paisaje palmero. Debes llevar todo lo que necesites contigo.
Caldera de Taburiente, desde el mirador de los Brecitos hasta el Barranco de las Angustias. Para hacer esta ruta hay que llegar en coche hasta el parking del barranco de las angustias y dejar ahí el coche. Hay taxis- furgonetas que te suben hasta el mirador: el taxi son 50€ y lo que hace todo el mundo es esperar a que vengan más personas para compartir. Hay que llegar pronto para hacer la ruta. Una vez que comienzas todo está indicado: primero es bajada hasta el punto de acampada, donde hay un río en el que te puedes bañar y admirar la caldera, que es impresionante. Luego ya se inicia la salida por el barranco de las angustias. Hay que llevarse todo lo que se necesite. En la zona de camping puedes rellenar el agua, lo único que te van a decir es que no está tratada.
Ruta de los volcanes: mi preferida. Es como si recorrieras media isla yendo por por el punto más alto. Tienes las vistas de ambas costas y es posible que camines una parte por encima de las nubes… en total son 24km de subidas y bajadas por montañas y volcanes que terminan en el Faro de Fuencaliente, momento ideal para ver las salinas que se encuentran en este lugar. Por el camino, y ya de bajada hacia el faro, se pasa por Fuencaliente, un pequeño pueblo que tiene un bar llamado ‘La parada’ donde podrás reponer fuerzas y de postre tomar un típico vino dulce de Malvasia (tranqui, a partir de aquí ya queda poco para llegar al final). Lo único que debes tener en cuenta para hacer esta ruta es que al no ser circular, necesitarás que alguien te recoja en el faro de Fuencaliente o usar un taxi para que te lleve de vuelta a tu coche.

Otro de los alicientes para visitar La Palma son sus miradores, algunos te van a dejar sin habla:

Por la carretera desde Santa Cruz a Tazacorte (antes de pasar el túnel) hay varios miradores, mi recomendación es parar en todos al menos una de las veces que cruces en uno de los sentidos. En ocasiones se ve el Teide delante.
Mirador del Time. Desde Tazacorte hay una carretera hacia el norte y desde el mirador se ve los Llanos, la zona del volcán de Cumbre Vieja, la costa, etc.
Mirador del Jable. Si vas desde Santa Cruz, está justo pasado el túnel. Los atardeceres son de otro mundo ya que a veces se crea una cama de nubes por debajo tuya. Además, si te quedas haciendo un picnic y esperas al anochecer, verás el maravilloso cielo estrellado tan famoso de La Palma. Como el volcán que erupcionó está justo debajo, es posible que siga habiendo fisuras por la zona y no se pueda permanecer mucho tiempo. Aun así merece la pena ir a ver el atardecer (lleva abrigo!).
Roque de los muchachos, la joya de la corona de La Palma. En coche se tarda 1h de subida y otra bajada. Una vez arriba recomiendo ir al mirador desde el que se ve la Caldera: cierra a las 19:00h. Desde esa hora hasta las 22:30 que comienzas a ver las estrellas, puedes hacer un picnic con el atardecer, el mar de nubes y los telescopios que forman parte de uno de los observatorios astronómicos más importantes del mundo junto con Hawai y Chile. Si el cielo está despejado, verás el cielo más maravilloso de tu vida (mucho frío por la noche).

Una de las características que tienen las islas volcánicas es que se forman piscinas naturales en las que puedes estar resguardado de las olas. Aquí tienes las mejores piscinas naturales de La Palma:

La Fajana, en Barlovento. Una buena opción es ir después de hacer el trekking de los Tilos y la puedes combinar con la siguiente:
Charco azul, en los Sauces. Además de la piscina principal que se ve al llegar, hay otra más a la derecha, no te quedes sin verla!
Charco verde: está cerca de Puerto Naos.

Las playas de La Palma en ocasiones son eclipsadas por sus rutas y sus miradores, pero no te puedes perder estas playas:

Los Nogales: a 30 min al norte de Santa Cruz. El baño está prohibido por las corrientes pero es una pasada verla y pasear por ella. Desde el parking a la playa hay unos 20 min de sendero (lleva zapatillas de trekking o deporte para este tramo, no chanclas o sandalias). ¿Imaginas ya lo especial que es?
Tazacorte. Es la playa donde más sol y menos olas vas a encontrar. Una playa para uno de esos días en los que no quieres preocuparte de nada más…
Puerto Naos: es una de las playas más turísticas porque es muy agradable. De arena negra, ha permanecido cerrada durante varios años como consecuencia de la erupción del volcán de Cumbre Vieja.
La Zamora. Se encuentra en el sur de la isla, pasado Fuencaliente. Lo mejor de esta playa es que se puede hacer snorkel ya que es una reserva y se ven muchos peces desde la orilla. Es necesario llevar escarpines.
Los Cancajos. Está a 5 min en coche al sur de Santa Cruz. Se puede hacer snorkel y también es necesario llevar escarpines. Aquí se puede ir en autobús desde Santa Cruz en el número 500 y, si eres de mucho caminar, también puedes llegar andando.
Santa Cruz tiene 2 playas: una en el paseo marítimo y otra pasado el puerto.

Todo depende del tiempo que tengas en La Palma, pero también te recomiendo hacer estas actividades en la isla bonita:

Visitar Proís de Candelaria. Es una cueva de pescadores pero de difícil acceso, la carretera es regular (muy empinada y estrecha). Se puede bajar con el coche para recorrer el pueblito pero también se ve desde el barco de la siguiente forma:
Hacer una excursión en barco desde Tazacorte: se puede hacer avistamiento de cetáceos, se visita la cueva bonita y Proís de candelaria. Muy recomendable!
Ver el volcán de Cumbre Vieja. Desde que este volcán entrara en erupción en 2021, el paisaje de la zona ha cambiado mucho. Se puede ver desde la zona de Los Llanos o subiendo desde Fuencaliente hacia la zona del volcán (esto lo puedes hacer el día que vayas a la playa de la Zamora). Desde esta parte el volcán queda muy cerca, es posible que aún huela a sulfato. También puedes parar donde se hacían todos los directos, que es bajando desde El Paso a los llanos, junto a la iglesia.
Comprar en La Recova: es el mercado de Santa Cruz. Un clásico: tomar un zumo de azúcar de caña con limón.
Recorrer el Volcán de San Antonio: se puede visitar, son 5€ por persona.
Ver el atardecer en el Faro de Fuencaliente: están las salinas y el restaurante La Sal.

La gastronomía es uno de los puntos fuertes de Canarias en general, pero en La Palma tienen sus propias particularidades. Lapas a la plancha, queso ahumado palmero, pescados que se llaman ‘viejita’ o ‘alfonsiño’, el postre más típico se llama ‘príncipe Alberto’, tienen chorizo de untar palmero, camarones, gofio escaldado, chicharrones con gofio… aquí dejo un listado con los mejores restaurantes de La Palma:

Restaurante El Pulpo en la playa de los Cancajos.
Kiosco La Zamora (en la playa con el mismo nombre). No reservan… pero cuando lleguéis os apuntáis en la lista y luego a la hora de comer te llaman por orden de lista. Mucha paciencia.
El charco azul. Hay un chiringuito para tapas. También paciencia.
Kiosco Teneguia en Tazacorte. Se puede reservar al llegar.
Casa Goyo. El más famoso de la isla, está junto al aeropuerto. No reservan… llegas y esperas. Mientras puedes pedir algo en la barra. Queso plancha, gofio escaldado, lapas y pescado brasa con papas para dos personas. Es un must en la isla, hay que ir.
Enriclai, en Santa Cruz: solo tienen 5 mesas. Hay que reservar con mucho tiempo. Tienen cocina según mercado. El pescado plancha muy bueno. De postre mouse con gofio con limón. Carmen, la dueña, es especial.
Chipi Chipi: un clásico en la isla donde la especialidad es la carne. El restaurante es muy curioso de ver.
Bar La Parada: al ir a Fuencaliente, hay que hacer una parada aquí para tomar vino Malvasia y almendrados. Otro clásico de la isla.
Otros restaurantes: Casa Osmunda (comida más peninsular), Los Almendros, La Sal (en el Faro de Fuencaliente, más caro).
Restaurantes en Santa Cruz: hay varios por el paseo marítimo. El “El cuarto de Tula” suelen tener camarones (muy demandados en verano), “La Lonja”, «La chalana»… en la playa hay un chiringuito llamado Malecón que está muy bien por las tardes.

IMPORTANTE: si Google maps o Waze te mete por un camino no asfaltado o asfaltado solo para dos ruedas, por ahí no es… suelen ser caminos palmeros, pero siempre hay otro camino para llegar al destino.

Laurisilva forests, trade winds, erupting volcanoes, lunar landscapes, cetaceans crossing the Atlantic, natural swimming pools and cuisine so delicious you’ll want to take it home with you. As if that wasn’t enough, few skies in the world can boast the best. No wonder they call La Palma ‘the beautiful island’.

Anyone who knows the Canary Islands knows that each island has its own character, each one is very different from the next, so for those who want to be amazed by this natural treasure, this is the definitive guide to visiting La Palma.

One of the main attractions of the island are the trekking routes. There is something for everyone so you should put them on your list of things to see and do in La Palma:

Simple routes:

Los Tilos. This is a simple and ideal route to understand how green this island is. My recommendation is to go to the viewpoint and on the way down, see the beautiful waterfall between the first car park and the visitor centre.
El Cubo de la Galga. This is another of the most famous routes, but there is a steeper climb from the start.
La Cumbrecita. It is in La Caldera de Taburiente. You have to ask permission to enter with the car. The route takes about 40 minutes. It is very simple and essential to see the Taburiente caldera from the inside, a real jewel of La Palma. If you do the route of Los Tilos or Cubo de la Galga and this one, you will understand perfectly the two landscapes that you can find on the island: laurel forests and Canary pine forests. (WARNING! The only radar on the island is just before the visitor centre of La Caldera, about 10 minutes after the tunnel, it indicates it. It works and fines. You are welcome).

Slightly more demanding routes, but incredible:

Marcos y Cordero: this is one of the most fascinating routes on La Palma. I will only say that you should bring a mackintosh and a headlamp. You go through 13 water tunnels and descend through the heart of the island, always accompanied by the sound of water and surrounded by a typical landscape of La Palma. You should take everything you need with you.
Caldera de Taburiente, from the Brecitos viewpoint to Barranco de las Angustias. To do this route you have to arrive by car to the car park of the Barranco de las Angustias and leave your car there. There are taxis and vans that will take you up to the viewpoint: the taxi fare is 50€ and what everyone does is wait for more people to come and share. You have to arrive early to do the route. Once you start, everything is signposted: first you go down to the campsite, where there is a river where you can swim and admire the caldera, which is impressive. Then you start the descent through the ravine of Las Angustias. You should take everything you need with you. In the camping area you can refill the water, the only thing they will tell you is that it is not treated.
Route of the volcanoes: my favourite. It’s as if you were covering half the island, going along the highest point. You have views of both coasts and it is possible to walk above the clouds for a part of it… in total there are 24km of ascents and descents through mountains and volcanoes that end at the Faro de Fuencaliente lighthouse, an ideal moment to see the salt flats that are found here. On the way down to the lighthouse, you pass through Fuencaliente, a small village with a bar called ‘La parada’ where you can recharge your batteries and have a typical sweet Malvasia wine for dessert (don’t worry, from here on there’s not much left to do before you reach the end). The only thing you should bear in mind when doing this route is that as it is not a circular route, you will need someone to pick you up at the lighthouse in Fuencaliente or use a taxi to take you back to your car.

Another incentive to visit La Palma are the viewpoints, some of them will leave you speechless:

On the road from Santa Cruz to Tazacorte (before passing the tunnel) there are several viewpoints, my recommendation is to stop at all of them at least once when crossing in one of the directions. Sometimes you can see the Teide in front of you.
Time viewpoint. From Tazacorte there is a road to the north and from the viewpoint you can see the Llanos, the volcano area of Cumbre Vieja, the coast, etc.
Mirador del Jable viewpoint. If you come from Santa Cruz, it is just past the tunnel. The sunsets are out of this world as sometimes a bed of clouds is created below you. Also, if you stay for a picnic and wait for the sunset, you will see the wonderful starry sky that La Palma is so famous for. As the volcano that erupted is just below, there may still be fissures in the area and you may not be able to stay there for long. Even so, it’s worth going to see the sunset (take a coat!).
Roque de los muchachos, the jewel in the crown of La Palma. By car it takes 1 hour up and 1 hour down. Once at the top I recommend going to the viewpoint from where you can see the Caldera: it closes at 19:00h. From that time until 22:30 when you start to see the stars, you can have a picnic with the sunset, the sea of clouds and the telescopes that form part of one of the most important astronomical observatories in the world, along with Hawaii and Chile. If the skies are clear, you will see the most wonderful sky of your life (very cold, very cold).

One of the characteristics of volcanic islands is that they form natural pools where you can be sheltered from the waves. Here are the best natural pools on La Palma:

La Fajana, in Barlovento. A good option is to go after the trekking of Los Tilos and you can combine it with the next one:
Charco Azul, in Los Sauces. As well as the main pool that you can see when you arrive, there is another one on the right, so don’t miss it!
Charco verde: it is near Puerto Naos.

The beaches of La Palma are sometimes overshadowed by its routes and viewpoints, but these beaches are not to be missed:

Los Nogales: 30 minutes north of Santa Cruz. Bathing is forbidden due to the currents, but it is a great sight to see and to walk along. From the car park to the beach there is a 20 minute walk (wear hiking or sports shoes for this stretch, not flip-flops or sandals). Can you imagine how special it is?
Tazacorte. This is the beach where you will find the most sun and the fewest waves. A beach for one of those days when you don’t want to worry about anything else?
Puerto Naos: it is one of the most touristy beaches because it is very pleasant. With black sand, it has been closed for several years due to the eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano.
La Zamora. It is located in the south of the island, just past Fuencaliente. The best thing about this beach is that you can snorkel as it is a reserve and you can see many fish from the shore. It is necessary to wear booties.
Los Cancajos. A 5 min drive south of Santa Cruz. You can snorkel here and also need to bring booties. You can get here by bus from Santa Cruz at number 500 and, if you are a walker, you can also walk here.
Santa Cruz has 2 beaches: one on the promenade and the other just past the harbour.

It all depends on the time you have in La Palma, but I also recommend you to do these activities on the beautiful island:

Visit Proís de Candelaria. It is a fishermen’s cave but difficult to access, the road is not very good (very steep and narrow). You can drive down to visit the village but you can also see it from the boat in the following way:
Take a boat trip from Tazacorte: you can go whale watching, visit the beautiful cave and Proís de Candelaria. Highly recommended!
See the Cumbre Vieja volcano. Since this volcano erupted in 2021, the landscape of the area has changed a lot. You can see it from the area of Los Llanos or going up from Fuencaliente to the volcano area (you can do this the day you go to Zamora beach). From here the volcano is very close, it is possible that it still smells of sulphate. You can also stop where all the direct flights used to be, which is down from El Paso to the plains, next to the church.
Shop at La Recova: this is the Santa Cruz market. A classic: have a cane sugar juice with lemon.
Visit the San Antonio volcano: you can visit it, it costs €5 per person.
Watch the sunset at the Faro de Fuencaliente lighthouse: there are the salt pans and the restaurant La Sal.

Gastronomy is one of the strong points of the Canary Islands in general, but La Palma has its own particularities. Grilled limpets, smoked cheese from La Palma, fish called ‘viejita’ or ‘alfonsiño’, the most typical dessert is called ‘príncipe Alberto’, they have chorizo de untar palmero, shrimps, gofio escaldado, chicharrones con gofio… here is a list of the best restaurants on La Palma:

Restaurant El Pulpo on the beach of Los Cancajos.
Kiosco La Zamora (on the beach with the same name). They don’t make reservations… but when you arrive you get on the list and then when it’s time to eat they call you in order of the list. A lot of patience.
El charco azul. There is a chiringuito for tapas. Also patience.
Kiosco Teneguia in Tazacorte. Reservations can be made on arrival.
Casa Goyo. The most famous on the island, next to the airport. No reservation…. you arrive and wait. In the meantime you can order something at the bar. Grilled cheese, scalded gofio, limpets and grilled fish with potatoes for two people. A must on the island, you have to go there.
Enriclai, in Santa Cruz: only 5 tables. You have to book well in advance. They have market cuisine. The grilled fish is very good. For dessert mouse with gofio with lemon. Carmen, the owner, is special.
Chipi Chipi: a classic on the island where the speciality is meat. The restaurant is very interesting to see.
Bar La Parada: when you go to Fuencaliente, you have to stop here for Malvasia wine and almendrados. Another classic on the island.
Other restaurants: Casa Osmunda (more peninsular food), Los Almendros, La Sal (in Faro de Fuencaliente, more expensive).
Restaurants in Santa Cruz: there are several along the promenade. El cuarto de Tula’ usually has shrimps (very popular in summer), “La Lonja”, “La chalana”… on the beach there is a beach bar called Malecón which is very good in the evenings.

IMPORTANT: if Google maps or Waze shows you an unpaved or asphalted road only for two wheels, that’s not the way… they are usually palm tree roads, but there is always another way to get to your destination.
