Moldavia: entre luces, nieve y vino.

Espíritu navideño entre bodegas, entre luces que decoran todos los rincones de la ciudad, entre recuerdos de lo que fue una república soviética, con cultura y tradiciones rumanas, y con un carácter amable, familiar y cercano con ganas de celebrar una Navidad cubierta de nieve.

Además… ¿te imaginas que el COVID te quite la Navidad y que luego … te la devuelvan?Así me he sentido en Moldavia. Recordaremos las navidades de 2020 por la llegada de una sexta ola que nos arrasó a todos. Y eso hizo, al menos en mi caso, que quisiera que esas fiestas terminaran rápido, sin ganas de disfrutarlas como en otras ocasiones. Y, sin ser yo nada de eso, llegué a una Moldavia con luces que adornaban hasta los autobuses urbanos y me contagié de ilusión y emoción. Incluso había nevado unos días antes para que la ciudad fuera un decorado perfecto cubierto de nieve. Y así, sin más, Chisinau me devolvió la Navidad.

Moldavia sigue siendo una gran desconocida y tiene muchas curiosidades que quizá no sepas:

Es una ex republica sovietica.
El idioma oficial es el rumano.
Es el séptimo país del mundo que más vino exporta.
Se ha posicionado como destino enológico por la calidad de sus vinos y el gran número de bodegas en el país.
Tiene la bodegas más grande del mundo: Milestii Mici tiene túneles subterráneos que alcanzan los 200km y además los puedes visitar en tu propio coche. Ah! También está en el Guinness de los récords por tener una colección de unos 2 millones de botellas.
Tiene una región llamada Transnistria que se independizó hace 30 años. Esta zona tiene su propia legislación, moneda y no está reconocido como país por ningún organismo (abajo más info).

¿Qué es Transnistria?

Es una región separatista prorrusa situada entre Moldavia y Ucrania que se autoproclamó República de Transnistria en 1990 y eso provocó una guerra con Moldavia que hace que aun hoy se vean soldados rusos en la frontera entre ambos territorios.

No está reconocido internacionalmente.
Pertenece a Moldavia pero tiene un estatus jurídico propio: como ejemplo, alquilamos un coche y el seguro moldavo no nos cubría en esta zona.
A diferencia de Moldavia donde la lengua oficial es el rumano, aquí hablan ruso.
Tienen su propia monea que solo es válida en este territorio: no se puede cambiar su dinero fuera de sus fronteras.
No hay cajeros.
Hay una frontera al entrar al “no país” y los rusos mantienen a sus soldados para conservar la influencia en la zona.
Hay un busto de Lenin enorme frente al parlamento.
Hay iconos por todas partes de la hoz y el martillo.
Tienen un restaurante que se llama «Back to the URSS» que es como trasladarse al pasado soviético.
Se ha hecho muy famoso últimamente porque su equipo de fútbol el Sheriff jugó con el Real Madrid.

Otros datos:

Recorrido para 3-4 días: Chisinau, visita a 2-3 bodegas, Orheiul Vechi y Transnistria.
Transporte: del aeropuerto de Chisinau al centro de la ciudad cogimos el autobús 31: pasa cada 40 minutos y tiene un precio de 2 leu (nos costó 0,20 euros ir 2 personas al centro). Para movernos por el país alquilamos un coche 2 días y así visitar bodegas, Transnistria y Orheiul Vechi.
Bodegas: visitamos Milestii Mici (las más grandes del mundo) y Mimi Castle. Los menús degustación de varios vinos y comida tradicional moldava rondan los 35-40€. También son muy famosas Cricova y Purcari. Ah! y el coñac moldavo.

Christmas spirit among wineries, among lights decorating every corner of the city, among memories of what was once a Soviet republic, with Romanian culture and traditions, and with a friendly, familiar and close character eager to celebrate a snow-covered Christmas.

What’s more… Can you imagine COVID taking Christmas away from you and suddenly … is given back to you? That’s how I felt in Moldova. We will remember Christmas 2020 for the arrival of a sixth wave that drove all of us crazy. And that made, at least in my case, that I wanted those holidays to end quickly, not enjoying them as other times. And as soon as I arrived in Moldova with lights that adorned even the city buses, I was infected with illusion and joy. It had even snowed a few days earlier to make the city a perfect snow-covered backdrop. And just like that, Chisinau brought Christmas back to me.

Moldova remains a great unknown and has many curiosities that you may not know about:

It is a former Soviet republic.
The official language is Romanian.
It is the seventh largest exporter of wine in the world.
It has positioned itself as a wine destination due to the quality of its wines and the large number of wineries in the country.
It has the largest wine cellar in the world: Milestii Mici has underground tunnels that reach 200km and you can visit them in your own car. Oh, it’s also in the Guinness Book of Records for having a collection of some 2 million bottles.
It has a region called Transnistria which became independent 30 years ago. This area has its own legislation, currency and is not recognised as a country by any international organization (more info below).

What is Transnistria?

It is a pro-Russian separatist region located between Moldova and Ukraine that proclaimed itself the Republic of Transnistria in 1990 and that provoked a war with Moldova that even today Russian soldiers can still be seen on the border between the two territories.

It is not internationally recognised.
It belongs to Moldova but has its own legal status: as an example, we rented a car and the Moldovan insurance did not cover us in this area.
Unlike Moldova where the official language is Romanian, here they speak Russian.
They have their own currency which is valid only in this territory: you can’t change your money outside their borders.
There are no cash machines.
There is a border when you enter the «non-country» and the Russians keep their soldiers to maintain their influence in the area.
There is a huge bust of Lenin in front of the parliament.
There are icons everywhere of the hammer and sickle.
They have a restaurant called «Back to the USSR» which is like going back to the Soviet past.
It has become very famous lately because their football team Sheriff played with Real Madrid.

Other info:

Tour for 3-4 days: Chisinau, visit 2-3 wineries, Orheiul Vechi and Transnistria.
Transport: public transport is really cheap: from Chisinau airport to the city centre we took bus 31. It runs every 40 minutes and costs 2 leu (about 0.20 euros for 2 people). To get around the country we rented a car for 2 days to visit wineries, Transnistria and Orheiul Vechi.
Wineries: we visited Milestii Mici (the biggest in the world) and Mimi Castle. Tasting menus with several wines and traditional Moldavian food are around 35-40€. Cricova and Purcari are also very famous. By the way, try also Moldovan cognac.
