La primera vez siempre se recuerda. La primera tortuga marina, el primer orangután, la primera tarántula… o el primer alce.

Recorrer las montañas rocosas de Canadá ha sido un regalo para los ojos y para el alma, pero algo que lo hace aun más especial es la vida animal. Y, si hay algo con lo que disfruto… es con ser una auténtica ranger y dirigir todos mis sentidos hacia esa búsqueda de lo salvaje.

Visitamos los maravillosos y muy recomendables Parques Nacionales de Banff y Jasper y, aunque tímidamente por seguir en condiciones invernales, encontramos los primeros atisbos del despertar de la primera.

Parar el coche, observar, hacer fotos, respetar su espacio, quedarte en silencio, disfrutar de la naturaleza. No necesito más.

¿Qué destaco?

• La carretera Icefields Parkway entre Banff y Jasper estuvo protagonizada por las parejas de grandes cuervos que nos acompañaron durante todo el viaje. Su descomunal tamaño y pelaje se explica fácilmente al sentir las gélidas temperaturas de la zona.
• Entre Jasper y el lago Maligne hay una carretera que nos regaló uno de los momentos más bonitos del viaje: un alce en la orilla de un río. El escenario del paisaje habla por sí mismo.
• Salirse de la ruta y acabar en un paso migratorio de aves fue tan casual como acertado. Sin ser una experta en la materia, vimos buitres negros, una gran variedad de águilas y rapaces, gansos canadienses y un largo etc. que no sabría enumerar. La zona de humedales en la carretera entre Golden y Radium Hot Springs es un auténtico paraíso para los ornitólogos.
• El broche mágico llegó cuando volamos junto a un águila americana, al mismo tiempo desde nuestro coche y por la rivera de un río en el momento del deshielo. Ella paraba en busca de su pesca, nosotros parábamos para observar. Ella continuaba su vuelo, nosotros con ella. Fue muy bonito compartir ese tiempo.

Buscamos el oso y no lo vimos… pero seguro que él sí nos vio a nosotros.

Eternamente agradecida por los momentos que nos han regalado las rocosas canadienses.

The first time is always remembered. The first sea turtle, the first orangutan, the first tarantula… or the first moose.

The road trip in the Canadian Rocky Mountains has been a treat for the eyes and for the soul, but something that makes it even more special is the animal life. And if there’s one thing I really love, it’s being a real ranger and put all my senses towards for a clue of wildlife.

We visited the wonderful and highly recommended Banff and Jasper National Parks and, even though we were still in winter conditions, we found the first glimpses of the former’s awakening.

Stop the car, observe, take photos, respect their space, be quiet, enjoy nature. That’s all I need.

My highlights:

• The Icefields Parkway between Banff and Jasper was dominated by the pairs of large ravens that accompanied us throughout the road trip. Their enormous size and fur is easily explained by the freezing temperatures in the area.
• Between Jasper and Maligne Lake there is a road that gave us one of the most beautiful moments of the trip: a moose on the bank of a river. The scenery speaks itself.
• Going off the beaten track and ending up at a migratory bird crossing was as serendipitous as successful. Without being an expert on the subject, we saw black vultures, a great variety of eagles and raptors, goose and a long etc. that I could not list.T he wetland area on the road between Golden and Radium Hot Springs is a birdwatcher’s paradise.
• The most magical moment of the trip came when we flew alongside an American eagle, at the same time from our car, down the side of a river at the time of the thaw. She stopped in search of her catch, we stopped to watch. She continued her flight, we continued with her. Simply amazing.

We looked for the bear and we didn’t see him… but we’re sure he saw us.

I have to say I will be eternally grateful for the moments the Canadian Rockies have given us.
