La primera vez que vives algo suele ser la más especial. Y aunque ya había hecho un safari por Borneo en busca de orangutanes y monos narigudos, este era mi primer safari en África. África… ahora entiendo el sentimiento de todas las personas que hablaban de este continente como un lugar mágico. Ahora soy esa gente.

Los colores del amanecer, ir en busca de los 5 grandes, tener un leopardo a menos de un metro, ver jirafas y elefantes tan de cerca… es alucinante. Un sueño.

Tengo la firme convicción de que así es como todos deberíamos ver los animales, en su hábitat natural. Nada de animales enjaulados, nada de animales para nuestro uso y disfrute.

¿Qué tiene de especial un safari? TODO. Pero lo mejor es la adrenalina desde las 4:30 que te levantas. Es de noche y ya estás pensando qué verás hoy, si tendrás suerte como para ver una escena de vida salvaje propia de un documental, si verás algún animal nuevo, si lo verás más de cerca… y es estar todo el día subido a un jeep con la atención puesta al 100% en la búsqueda de animales. No se me ocurre un plan mejor.

Mi primer safari ha sido en Sudáfrica, en el Parque Kruger, donde además de encontrarse los 5 grandes (y los 5 más feos según dicen ellos), y un sinfín de animales, habitan más de 500 especies de aves: ¡de pronto me he dado cuenta que tengo una gran afición a la ornitología!

Después de Kruger, hice un viaje por Mozambique (y qué viaje!)

The first time you do somethinf is often the most special. And although I had already been on safari in Borneo in search of orangutans and snub-nosed monkeys, this was my first safari in Africa. Africa… now I understand the feeling of all the people who spoke about this continent as a magical place. Now I am the people.

The colours of the sunrise, going in search of the Big 5, having a leopard less than a metre away, seeing giraffes and elephants so close… it’s mind-blowing. It’s a dream.

I have the firm conviction that this is how we should all see animals, in their natural habitat. No caged animals, no animals for our use and enjoyment.

What is so special about a safari? EVERYTHING. But the best thing is the adrenaline rush from the time you wake up at 4:30. It’s still dark outside and you’re already thinking about what you’ll see today, if you’ll be lucky enough to see a wildlife scene from a documentary, if you’ll see any new animals, if you’ll see them up close… and you’ll spend the whole day in a jeep with your attention 100% focused on the search for animals. I can’t think of a better plan.

My first safari was in South Africa, in the Kruger Park, where besides the Big 5 (and the 5 ugliest ones, they say), and countless animals, there are more than 500 species of birds: I suddenly realised that I have a great love for ornithology!
